According to WHO resolutions, drowning is now recognized as a major global issue. While around 240,000-250,000 people were drowning each year before 2019, that number has increased to over 300,000 annually. This makes drowning the third leading cause of death from unintentional injuries, accounting for 9% of all such deaths. Plus, the real numbers could be even higher due to potential underreporting.

WHO reports that investing in drowning prevention and water safety could save 774,000 children by 2050 and prevent $400 billion in economic losses. With drowning deaths among children disproportionately high, WHO urges governments to prioritize prevention and proposes a global alliance with the UN to address this issue.
